Swimming

The Waterville Valley Summer Camp swim course provides extended levels of instruction as well as fun incorporated into a program to produce results that allow campers to enjoy swimming as a life long skill. The program is designed so that campers are exposed to a learning program that allows swimming for fitness, fun, and competition.

Swimming will occur throughout the camper's stay in the morning, afternoon, and evenings on various days. Campers will have instruction in Learn-to-Swim courses and play water games during their stay. Water obstacle courses, treasure hunts, evening pool party and games will allow campers to enjoy the water in a fun and safe manner.

The Waterville Valley Summer Camp swim program follows the American Red Cross Learn-to-Swim standards to help swimmers of all ages and abilities to develop swimming and water safety skills. The course is designed so that campers have a positive learning experience.

Campers will learn aquatic and water safety skills in a logical progression. All swimmers will be evaluated on the first Monday of camp and placed in levels to best suit their swimming ability and learning capability. Skills are categorized into six levels with the objective of teaching campers to swim and to be safe in, on, and around water.

The six levels are as follows:
Level 1 Introduction to Water Skills-low intensity basic skills are taught to help campers feel comfortable in and around water while enjoying the water safely with fun and enthusiasm.
Level 2 Fundamental Aquatic Skills-slightly more intense instruction so that campers may enjoy success with the basic fundamental swimming skills.
Level 3 Stroke Development-instruction is guided towards practice on Level 2 skills to build endurance and efficiency in swimming strokes.
Level 4 Stroke Improvement-instruction is based upon building confidence in strokes and extending distance swimming and entry techniques.
Level 5 Stroke Refinement-critical evaluation pinpoints refinement in strokes and breaks down mechanics of efficient swimming.
Level 6 Swimming and Skill Proficiency-teaching techniques again refine strokes for power and smoothness over great distances. This level also includes options for more advanced courses such as Water Safety Instructor, Diving, and Lifeguard Training.
